> 稽顙 (fanqie: 溪 + 禮; a borrowed character. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: "稽首 means the head touching the ground." Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli says: "稽首 is a bow with the head reaching the ground." The Shuowen says: "It is classified under head (首) and takes 𣅀 as phonetic." The orthodox ancient form is \[((巨-匚)/日)\*(首-目+日)\], which is the character for head. The sūtra writes it as 稽, whose original pronunciation is jī; it has long been borrowed by tradition. The second character has the fanqie: 桑 + 朗; the Fangyan says: "顙 means forehead." He Xiu's commentary on the Gongyang zhuan says: "稽顙 is like the present-day knocking of the head upon the ground.")
