> Beating and caning (捶楚: the first character has the fanqie ji\[ā\] + \[ru\]ǐ; the Guoyu says: "Whipping and caning them into service"; this is it. The Shuowen says: "Chui (捶) means to strike with a staff"; it has the hand radical and the phonetic chui (垂); or with the tree radical, which is also acceptable; others say it means to pluck. The second character has the fanqie ch\[ū\] + \[su\]ǒ; the Mao commentary on the Shijing says: "Chu (楚) is the name of a wood." Zheng's commentary on the Liji says: "Chu is the chaste tree (vitex)." The Shuowen says: "Thicket"; it has the grove radical and the phonetic shu/suo (疋); 疋 has the sound shu, and also the sound suo).
