> Manacles and fetters (the upper character is \[pronounced with the fanqie\] 勑 + 柳; it is also written 抙. The lower is \[pronounced with the fanqie\] 諧 + 戒. What is on the hands is called niu; what is on the feet is called xie. Xie means shackles and stocks (zhigu): zhi are foot-irons, by which one is fixed to the ground; gu are hand-irons, by which one is reported to Heaven. Speaking from this, niu is not necessarily only on the hands, nor is xie exclusively on the feet; niu and xie are generic terms for shackles, stocks, cangues, and chains. Zhi is pronounced 質; gu is pronounced 谷, deriving from the告 radical).
