> Flogged and beaten (the upper character is \[pronounced with the fanqie\] 必 + 綿. The Shuowen says: 'Bian means to strike; it takes the leather radical with bian as phonetic.' Ancient script writes it as \[企-止+(敲-高)\]. The lower character is \[pronounced with the fanqie\] 炭 + 割. The Guangya says: 'Ta means to strike.' The Zhouli says: 'To whip the negligent.' The Gujin zhengzi derives it from the hand radical with da as phonetic; ancient script writes it as \[敲-高+(土/羊)\], 𢺂, or \[描-田+(口/(白-日+(罩-卓+(鼠-臼)))\]. In the Shuowen the character da derives from the movement radical with \[((嘹-口)-小)-日+(工/十)\] as phonetic; \[((嘹-口)-小)-日+(工/十)\] has the same sound as above).
