> 苾蒭 (Upper character: pí + yì \[bì\]; lower character: cè + yú \[chū\]. Sanskrit \[bhikṣu\], the name of a grass. According to Master Sengzhao's explanation, a bhikṣu possesses four supreme virtues: first, pure begging for food; second, destroying afflictions; third, ability to maintain the precepts; fourth, ability to terrify Māra. The Sanskrit formulation is so ingenious that a single word encompasses all four meanings, hence the Sanskrit term is retained).
