> Kites and owls (鴟梟: the upper character is chi + zhi fan; it is the seal-script character for owl/kite. The Shuowen jiezi notes that some write it with bird (隹) as 鴟; 鴟 means a hawk, and is also a kite bird. The Liji says: 'When dust rises ahead, carry the kite banner; when it screeches, the wind rises.' The Shuowen jiezi writes it with \[前-刖+(┴\*├)\] as \[(前-刖+(十-一+└))/鳥\]; the Kaiyuan yinyi writes it with qian as 𩾭, both pronounced yuan. The lower character is jiao + yao fan. Zheng \[Xuan's\] commentary to the Mao Shijing says: an ill-omened screeching bird. The Shuowen jiezi says: an unfilial bird; it depicts a bird's head atop a tree; popularly called the horned owl).
