> Worms and maggots (蟲䏣: \[蟲 is\] zhu + rong fan. The Erya says: those with legs are called insects (蟲); those without legs are called creeping grubs (豸). The sūtra text writes 虫, which is an erroneous abbreviation. The lower character is qi + yu fan. The Shuowen jiezi says: worms born in flesh from flies breeding; it takes the flesh signific and ju abbreviative phonetic. In the sūtra it is written as 蛆, which is a popular character).
