> Chain of bones (骨瑣: \[瑣 is\] su + guo fan. The Guangya says: 瑣 means connected. The character dictionaries say: interlocking rings. Examining this, 'chain of bones' refers to the bodily bones of a bodhisattva. The Fo benxing ji jing says: 'The joints of ordinary beings barely support one another, having only the strength of an ordinary man. The joints of a bodhisattva are all hooked and linked together, resembling a horse's bit and interlocking chain, thereby accomplishing the vast strength of Nārāyaṇa.' The Shuowen jiezi says: the character 瑣 takes the jade signific and suo phonetic; 𧴪 has the same sound as above, and takes small (小) and cowrie (貝). In the sūtra it takes nest (巢), which is an error).
