> 擗踊 ("beating the breast and stomping the feet"; the former character, fanqie: 毗 + 亦. The Mao Commentary to the Shijing says: "Pi (擗) means striking the chest." Guo Pu says: "Pi means pounding the breast." The Xiaojing says: "Beating the breast, stomping the feet, weeping and wailing." The Gujin zhengzi says: "It takes 手 as semantic and 辟 as phonetic." In the sūtra text it is written with 足 as 躃, which is incorrect. The latter character, fanqie: 容 + 腫. Zheng's Commentary to the Liji says: "The stomping of weeping is like the yearning of an infant." Gu Yewang says: "Yong (踊) means stamping the feet upon the ground." The Shuowen says: "To leap; it takes 足 as semantic and 甬 as phonetic"; 甬 is pronounced the same. In the yong of weeping and breast-beating, writing it with 𡗱 is also interchangeable).
