(Entering the cage and pen of suffering): 檻 (\*jian\*) is pronounced 胡 (\*hu\*) + 黤 (\*yan\*) \[jiàn\]. The character 籠 should properly be 櫳. The \*Sancang\* says: '櫳 (\*long\*) is an enclosure or pen used to hold birds and beasts.' The \*Shuowen\* says: '櫳 (\*long\*) means pen/cage.' Guo Pu's commentary on the \*Shanhaijing\* says: '檻 (\*jian\*) means railing; digging a pit in the ground and setting bars over it to confine birds and beasts.' Here the sūtra means that the suffering of the triple realm is like such a cage, imprisoning sentient beings; or it refers to the severe suffering of the three realms of woe as the "cage and pen of suffering".'
