> Cushions and mats \[茵蓐\] (yin \[茵\] is pronounced 於真 \[ʔ- + (tɕ)iɪn \> yīn\]; ru \[蓐\] is pronounced 如欲 \[ɲ- + (j)owk \> rù\]. The Mao Commentary on the Shijing says: “Yin is tiger skin.” The Yupian says: “Using tiger skin as a mat is called yin; the character is also written 鞇.” Guo's commentary on the Erya says: “Ru is a mat.” The Shenglei says: “Ru is a mattress.” In our text, for the two characters yin and ru, if made of grass they take the grass radical; if made of hide they take the leather radical; that the character ru is written with the clothing radical is because they are interchangeable).
