菩薩為一切眾生恃怙（恃時止反怙胡古反韓詩傳曰無父何恃恃負也無母何怙怙賴也案經義菩薩於眾生如父母慈威兼濟常為倚賴也）。

> The bodhisattva is the shelter and support for all sentient beings \[菩薩為一切眾生恃怙\] (shi \[恃\] is pronounced 時止 \[ʑ- + (tɕ)ɨX \> shì\]; hu \[怙\] is pronounced 胡古 \[ɣ- + (k)uoX \> hù\]. The Han Commentary on the Shijing says: “Without a father, whom can one rely on? Shi means to rely upon. Without a mother, whom can one lean on? Hu means to depend upon.” Examining the meaning of the sūtra: the bodhisattva is like parents to sentient beings, possessing both compassion and dignity to relieve them, constantly serving as their support).
