> 須臾 (an instant \[muhūrta\]: the Yupian says: "Xuyu is a brief moment." According to the Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya, the Abhiniṣkramaṇa-sūtra, and others: the smallest division of time is called one kṣaṇa; one hundred and twenty kṣaṇas make one tatkṣaṇa; sixty tatkṣaṇas make one lava; thirty lavas make one muhūrta; thirty muhūrtas make one day and night. Based on the Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra, one day and night consists of thirty xuyu, which are precisely muhūrtas. The sūtra says that looking at a person's shadow from sunrise when it is ninety-six feet long is the first xuyu, and so forth).
