> 'Shaking and quaking' (The gathering at the Twin Trees had unusual signs: first there was the sign of sound, matching their respective sounds; next there was the sign of light, emitted from the portal of the face; this was the third sign, the quaking of the earth. If there were only sound without light, the deaf would not hear; if only light without sound, the blind would not see. Therefore, the earth had to quake to summon universally those with karmic conditions; such is the Tathāgata's esoteric intent).
