> Asaṃ- (阿僧): asaṃkhyeya, translated here as "innumerable" (wu yangshu); the term for an exhaustive number. The Abhidharmakośa-śāstra states that the basic numbers were sixty, of which eight have been lost through transmission; "innumerable" is the fifty-second. The Avataṃsaka-sūtra lists one hundred and twenty numbers, among which "innumerable" is the one hundred and twentieth.
