> Singing hymns (唄: \*bu-kɛy\* \[fanqie: 蒲介\], in Sanskrit bhāṣā, translated here as praise/eulogy; the syllable 婆 is \*bu-ha\* \[fanqie: 蒲賀\]. The earlier rendering 唄匿 is erroneous. This refers to the three-section chanting style of the Western Regions, such as that composed by Śroṇa. The Xuanji ji states: 'Cao Zhi, Prince Si of Chen, ascended Mount Yu and suddenly heard the sound of sūtra-chanting echoing from the crags and ravines, limpid and melodious, forceful and clear, reverberating far through the valley. He thereupon modelled a sound upon it and composed Sanskrit hymns (fanbai), which have been transmitted to this day.' The character 唄 is also of recent origin and has no classical derivation).
