> Bodhisattva-mahāsattva: (Bodhi is awakening, wisdom; sattva is a sentient being, the courageous and heroic, or skillful means. Awakening is the fruit sought by knowledge; sentient beings are those ferried across by compassion; being named based on their vast vows, they are called 'bodhisattva'. Or \[it means\] 'a sentient being who seeks the fruit of awakening', or 'a courageous hero among them'. Or, because through wondrous wisdom and skillful means they benefit and gladden \[others\] without limit, they are called 'bodhisattva'. Mahāsattva means 'great sentient being', distinguished from those who seek the lesser awakening and those in ordinary, lower ranks; hence named 'mahāsattva').
