> Collared owlet (鵂鶹): The upper character is pronounced \*xiū\* (鵂), and the lower character is pronounced \*liú\* (鶹). Note: The collared owlet is a nocturnal bird of prey. It hides by day and flies by night, preying upon crows, magpies, and various other birds. It is as large as a crested goshawk, with a sharp beak and talons, eyes like red copper, and a gaze that pierces through people. It is also called \*xūnhú\* (薰胡) or \*xìnhóu\* (釁侯). Its call mimics its own name. Any other interpretations are incorrect. Fearing verbosity, I cannot cite them fully.
