谷響（上公屋反尒雅水注谿曰谷說文泉水出通川為谷從水半見出於谷口象形字下鄉兩反孔注尚書云若響之應聲也說文從音鄉聲經文從向作嚮非也是歆響字非此用也）。

> Valley echo (谷響): The upper character has the fanqie \*gōng\* + \*wū\* (谷). The \*Erya\* says: 'Water pouring into a ravine is called a valley.' The \*Shuowen \[jiezi\]\* says: 'A spring gushing forth into an open stream forms a valley. Derived from 水 half visible emerging from the mouth of a valley; a pictographic character.' The lower character has the fanqie \*xiāng\* + \*liǎng\* (響). Kong \[Anguo\]'s commentary on the \*Book of Documents\* says: 'Like an echo responding to a sound.' The \*Shuowen \[jiezi\]\* derives it from 音 with 鄉 as phonetic. The scripture writes 嚮 with 向, which is incorrect; that is the character for enjoying offerings, not intended here.
