憐愍（上練年反爾雅愛也𦒱聲哀也經作怜俗字也下旻殞反何休注公羊傳云愍傷也謚法曰使人悲傷曰愍說文從心敃音同上）。

> Pity and compassion (憐愍: the first character, lian \[練\] + nian \[年\] fan. The Erya says: “To love.” The Kaosheng says: “To mourn.” In the sūtra written as 怜, a vulgar character. The second character, min \[旻\] + yun \[殞\] fan. He Xiu's commentary to the Gongyang zhuan says: “愍 means to feel wounded \[for someone\].” The Posthumous Titles law says: “Causing people to grieve and feel wounded is called 愍.” The Shuowen says it is formed from heart \[心\] with 敃 phonetic, which has the same sound as above).
