### [3.48](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2128.3.48)

> 喪失 (\*sāng\* + \*zàng\* \[fanqie: sàng\]; the Kaosheng says: "'Sàng' means to lose." The Shuowen jiezi says: "It means to perish; derived from 'kū' (to weep), where 'kū' is \*kǔ\* + \*gǔ\* \[fanqie\], and with 'wáng' as phonetic." In sūtras it is written as 喪 or as \[〦/(口\*口)/(┌/┌/一)\], both of which are corruptions. The lower character 'shī': the Shuowen jiezi says: "'Shī' means to let go; derived from 'shǒu' (hand) and 'yǐ' (乙)." The clerical script writes it as 失, which is corrupt).
