折伏（上章熱反孔注尚書云折斷也謂斷獄也廣雅折曲也古今正字從手斤聲也下馮福反𦒱聲云屈伏也從也說文云伏伺也犬伺人便即伏故從人從犬會意字也）。

> 折伏 (the upper character is \*zhāng\* + \*rè\* \[fanqie: zhé\]; Kong \[Anguo\]'s commentary on the Shangshu says: "'Zhé' means to cut off, referring to deciding legal verdicts." The Guangya says: "'Zhé' means to bend." The Gujin zhengzi says: "Derived from 'shǒu' (hand) with 'jīn' (斤) as phonetic." The lower character is \*féng\* + \*fú\* \[fanqie: fú\]; the Kaosheng says: "To submit or yield; to obey." The Shuowen jiezi says: "'Fú' means to lie in wait; when a dog waits for a human's convenience, it crouches down, hence it is derived from 'rén' (man) and 'quǎn' (dog), an ideogrammatic compound").
