> 牢籠 (láo lóng: \[牢 is\] lǎo-dāo fanqie. The Fangyan says: 'Láo means an enclosure.' The Shuowen says: 'An enclosure; an enclosure for raising livestock.' Correctly derived from 牛 (ox) with an abbreviated 舟 (boat); the meaning of 舟 takes the sense of encompassing on all four sides. Or derived from \[白-日+(冉-土+(一/(人\*人)))\], which is the ancient character 終. The lower is lù-hóng fanqie. The Kaosheng says: 'Lóng is a bamboo receptacle.' In the Zhuangzi: 'A dove inside a cage (lóng)' is an example. In the Gujin zhengzi, it is derived from 竹 (bamboo) with 龍 as phonetic).
