> 烝涌 (The first character is pronounced with the fanqie 職 + 繩. Gu Yewang says: it refers to vapor steaming forth. The Shuowen says: fire-vapor moving upward; it takes the 'fire' radical and 烝 as phonetic. The text of the sūtra written with the 'grass' radical as 蒸; the Erya says: 蒸 is like sacrifice, which is not the meaning here in the sūtra. The second character is pronounced with the fanqie 容 + 聳. Liu Zhao's commentary on the Gongyang zhuan says: 涌 means to gush forth. Gu Yewang says: it refers to water surging forth. The Huainanzi says: the arrival of the myriad things is a surging forth. The Shuowen says: it takes the 'water' radical and 甬 as phonetic. The pronunciation of 甬 is the same as above. It is also written 湧.)
