> 筋脉 ("sinews and vessels"; the upper character \[筋\] is jin-xin fan; the Book of Rites says: 'The elderly do not use muscular strength for propriety', which is this; the Shuowen says: 'Jin means the strength of the flesh; from the flesh radical and bamboo radical, bamboo being an object with many sinewy fibers; from strength, strength picturing a sinew.' The lower character \[脉\] is meng-nie fan; correctly written \[覛-見+皿\], also written 脈; the Shuowen says: 'The divisions of blood channels that circulate diagonally through the body; from 𠂢 with xie \[blood\] phonetic; 𠂢 is pronounced pai-mai fan'; the sūtra writes it with the flesh radical as 脉, which is a popular variant that has been in use for a long time, hence preserved here).
