> 果蓏 ('fruits and melons'; the upper character is pronounced 果 \[guǒ\], properly written with 艸 \['grass'\], being a popular character. The lower character is pronounced 騾 \[luó\] + 果 \[guǒ\] fanqie. Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli says: '果 \[guǒ\] refers to fruits like peaches and plums; 蓏 \[luǒ\] refers to gourds and melons.' Zhang Yan's commentary on the Han shu says: 'Those with pits are called 果 \[guǒ\]; those without pits are called 蓏 \[luǒ\].' Ying Shao's commentary on the Han shu says: 'Tree fruits are called 果 \[guǒ\]; vine/grass fruits are called 蓏 \[luǒ\].' The Zhouyi speaks of "fruits and gourds" \[果蓏\], which is this. The Shuowen has it composed of 艸 \['grass'\] with 㼌 as phonetic. 瓞 is pronounced 徒 \[tú\] + 結 \[jié\] fanqie. 㼌 is pronounced 庾 \[yǔ\]).
