> 虎賁 \[Tiger-like warriors\]: The first \[character\] is fanqie 呼 (hu) + 古 (gu) \[MC: \*xuǒ\]; the second is fanqie 博 (bo) + 門 (men) \[MC: \*puən\]. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu states: '虎賁 (huben) is a designation for brave warriors; as when a tiger charges fiercely into battle, expressing their ferocity.' The Zhouli states: 'The Zuben family was in charge of holding halberds, escorting the king's chariot on both sides as they ran briskly'—this is it. The Shuowen jiezi states: '虎 (tiger) is formed from 虍; a tiger's feet resemble a human's feet, a pictographic character.' 虍 has the sound 呼 (hu). In the sūtra text, writing it with 巾 as 𧆞 is incorrect. 賁 is formed from 貝 with the phonetic 卉. 卉 has the sound 諱 (hui).
