> Shaving the beard \[鬀須\]: the first \[character is pronounced with the fanqie\] ti-di (梯帝反). Xu \[Shen's\] commentary on the Huainanzi states: 'Tì (鬀) means to cut hair.' The Shuowen \[jiezi\] says it is formed from \[the semantic component\] biāo (髟; pronounced biao) and \[the phonetic component\] dì (弟). The Kaosheng says: 'Cutting hair with the knife radical is written as 剃, which is a vulgar character.' The second is \[pronounced with the fanqie\] xiang-yu (相逾反). Zheng \[Xuan's\] commentary on the Zhouli states: 'Xū (須) means facial hair.' Also: 'Hair below the jaw.' The Shuowen \[jiezi\] also states: 'Facial hair.' It is formed from \[the semantic components\] shān (彡) and yè (頁), being a pictograph.
