The first character has the fanqie tan + nan (shàn). The \*Erya\* says: 'A sandbank emerging from the water is called a shan; a phono-semantic compound character.' The second character is pronounced tan (tán). Wang Yi's commentary to the \*Chuci\* says: 'Tan means calm and deep.' The people of southern Chu call deep water tan; tan means tranquil and deep; it is also a phono-semantic compound character. Writing it as 灘 is not the ancient character.
