> 綬帶 (The upper character is pronounced 受. The Liji says: "The Son of Heaven has dark corded ribbons; dukes and marquises have vermilion corded ribbons; grand masters have black corded ribbons; heirs apparent have grey-green corded ribbons; servicemen have hempen corded ribbons." Zheng Xuan says: "A ribbon is that by which suspended jades are strung together and attached. 綬 means to tie." The Sequel to the Book of Han says: "In antiquity, the wearing of jades followed the ranks of noble and base. When the Five Hegemons arose in turn and warfare never ceased, jades were not weapons of war, nor ribbons military banners; thereupon they took off the ribbons and jades, retaining their silk tasselled bands as badges. After ribbons and jades were discarded, the Qin tied colored silk to the tasselled bands, and high officials added rings and discs; bright and gleaming badges were mutually tied with cords, hence called 綬 ribbons. 綬 also means sash.")
