蛇螫（上時遮反說文云從虫而長象宛曲垂尾形也古作它亦音他上古穴居野處故相問云得無他乎經文作虵隸書變體時用字也下音聲亦反又音郝並通也）。

> 蛇螫 (The upper character is pronounced with the fanqie 時遮 \[shé\]. The Shuowen says: "Belonging to the insect class yet elongated, picturing a sinuous, drooping tail." Ancients wrote it as 它, also pronounced 他 \[tā\]. In high antiquity, humans lived in caves and dwelt in the wilderness; thus when inquiring about each other they would ask: 'Is there any other \[danger\] (得無他乎)?' In the sūtra text it is written as 虵, which is a variant clerical form used in contemporary writing. The lower character is pronounced with the fanqie 聲亦 \[shì\], or also with the sound 郝 \[shì\]; both are acceptable.)
