The Zishu says: "The crane resembles a swan but has a long beak; it is a bird of the divine immortals. Its appearance portends auspicious omens." The Baopuzi says: "The crane cries in the nine marshes, its sound heard in the heavens." The Huainanzi says: "The rooster knows the coming of dawn, the crane knows midnight"; this is it. The Shuowen says: "It takes its semantic element from 鳥 (bird) and 隺 (fanqie 何各) for its sound."
