> Able to pierce (能剌: the first character, nu \[奴\] + deng \[登\] fan. The Guangya says: “能 means capable.” The Boya says: “Able to undertake a task.” The Shuowen says: “能 is of the bear genus; its legs resemble a deer, hence formed from two bǐ \[匕\], from flesh \[肉\], with \[└@(┐/┐)\] phonetic.” \[└@(┐/┐)\] is the ancient character for 以. Modern clerical script, due to cursive abbreviation, reduces it to 々, which is not only an erroneous abbreviation but incorrect. In the sūtra written as 能 in cursive error, which is also wrong. The second character, qing \[青\] + yi \[亦\] fan. The Shuowen says: “To wound directly; formed from knife \[刀\] with 朿 phonetic.” In the sūtra written with 夾 as 㓨, an erroneous vulgar character. Bear has the sound xiong \[雄\]).
