> Nests and caves \[巢穴\] (the upper character is chai + you fan \[chao\]. The Mao Odes says: 'Only the magpie has a nest.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'A bird upon a tree.' Zheng's commentary on the Book of Rites says: 'A nest is high; it is a pictographic character.' In the sūtra it is written with 'fruit' as 巢, which is an error. The lower character is xuan + xue fan \[xue\]. The Shuowen jiezi says: 'An earthen chamber. The Book of Changes states: In high antiquity, people dwelt in caves and lived in the wilderness—this is it.' Fully explained in fascicle forty-one of the second sūtra in the sounds and meanings of the previous sūtra.)
