> 怯弱 \[timid and weak\] (The first character has the fanqie \[欺+業\] qiè. The Yunying says: qiè means terrified. The Kaosheng says it means frail and weak. Gu Yewang says it means fearful and inferior. The Shuowen writes it with 'dog' as 㹤, meaning full of fear; because dogs are prone to fright, it takes 'dog' with qù phonetic; writing it with 'heart' as 怯 is also acceptable. The second character has the fanqie \[穰+灼\] ruò. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: feeble and inferior. The Kaosheng says: lacking strength. The Shuowen says: weak and yielding; the upper part depicts bending; to be weak is to bend. When things are weak, they must combine forces, hence it is formed from two bows and 彡, depicting tiny, fragile hairs).
