淺深（千演反說文不𣸧也從水戔聲也戔音察限反下傷任反考聲𣸧𨗉也說文從水從罙音同上今相傳從罙音山林反說文𣸧也亦通罙亦云竈突也）。

> Shallow and deep (淺深: pronounced \[千 + 演\] q-iǎn \[qiǎn\]. The Shuowen says: "Not deep. It derives from 水 with 戔 as phonetic." 戔 is pronounced \[察 + 限\] c-àn \[càn\]. The second character is pronounced \[傷 + 任\] sh-ēn \[shēn\]. The Kaosheng says: "𣸧 (shen) means profound." The Shuowen derives it from 水 and 罙, pronounced the same as above. Nowadays it is customarily transmitted deriving from 罙, pronounced \[山 + 林\] sh-ēn \[shēn\]. The Shuowen says it means deep, which is also accepted; 罙 also refers to a chimney flue).
