> Governing the multitude (乂蒸: the first character is pronounced \[魚 + 偈\] y-ì \[yì\]. Kong \[Anguo's\] commentary on the Shangshu says: "乂 (yi) means to govern." The Kaosheng says: "乂 (yi) means to put at peace." The Shuowen says: "To mow grass. It derives from \[必-心\] and 乀 intersecting, called 乂." \[必-心\] is pronounced 夭 \[yǎo\]; the Shuowen says it means turning leftward. 乀 is pronounced \[皮 + 密\] p-ì \[pì\]; the Shuowen says it means turning rightward. The second character is pronounced \[軄 + 仍\] zh-ēng \[zhēng\]. The Erya and the Xiaoya explain 蒸 (zheng) as ruler; the Han Poetry explains it as multitude and good. The Boya says: "蒸蒸 (zhengzheng) means filial piety." The Shuowen derives it from 草 and 灬, with 承 as phonetic. 灬 is pronounced \[必 + 遙\] b-iāo \[biāo\]).
