> Narrow and constrained (隘陿: for the first character, fanqie yā-jiè. The Guangya says: "Ài (隘) means cramped; it also means narrow." Wang Yi's commentary on the Chuci says: "Dangerous and constricted; precarious." Sometimes written as 阸. In the Shuowen jiezi it is written as \[(白-日+臣)\*益\*(白-日+臣)\] and also as \[(白-日+臣)\*角\*(白-日+臣)\], both being ancient characters; now written in simplified form as 隘 or 阸, both of which are standard. For the second character, fanqie xián-jiǎ. Gu Yewang says: "Cramped and constrained; not broad or spacious." The Shuowen jiezi says: "Constrained; composed of the mound radical (阜) with jiā (匧) phonetic." In the sūtra text, writing it with the dog radical as 狹 is incorrect).
