> Adders and scorpions (蝮蠍: for the first character, fanqie fāng-fú. The Erya says: "The fù (蝮) adder is three inches wide, its head as large as a thumb." Guo Pu's commentary says: "Like a human thumb." The Shiji says: "When an adder stings the hand, sever the hand; an evilly venomous snake." For the second character, fanqie xuān-yè; common speech throughout the four regions; composed of the insect radical with xiē (歇) phonetic. In the sūtra text, writing it with hé (曷) is incorrect. Its popular name is tà-là (𧔣𱿴), found in the Tongsu wen; the upper character is fanqie tā-gē, and the lower character is fanqie láng-gē. There are further other names, which are not recorded here).
