- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [44.149](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2128.44.149)

The \*Shuowen jiezi\* says: 'Sound (音). Arising in the mind and having modulated rhythm on the outside is called 音.' It refers to the notes gong, shang, jue, zhi, and yu; also metal, stone, silk, bamboo, gourd, clay, leather, and wood. It is formed from 言 \[speech\] containing 一 \[one\]. In one scripture it is written 暗 with the mouth radical; the \*Shuowen jiezi\* says: 'Between Qi and Song, when a child cries without stopping it is called 暗.' This is not the meaning intended by the scripture).
