> Armies and troops (軍旅: first character \[軍\] is jiong plus yun fanqie \[jūn\]; second character \[旅\] is li plus ju fanqie \[lǚ\]. The Zhouli states: five men make a squad (wu); five squads make a liang; four liang make a zu; five zu make a brigade (lü); five lü make a division (shi); two shi make an army (jun). Zheng's commentary on the Lunyu says: "Twelve thousand five hundred men make an army (jun)." Jia's commentary on the Guoyu says: "Jun is like an encampment (tun); it is composed of 'chariot' \[車\] with bao \[勹\] as phonetic, deploying an army of five hundred men. \[Lü \[旅\]\] is composed of 'banner' \[㫃\] showing brigades marching together; hence it has the component cong \[从\]." Bao is bao plus jiao fanqie \[bāo\]; \[㫃\] is pronounced yan \[yǎn\]; cong \[从\] is the ancient form of cong \[從\]).
