> 鬚髮 (the upper character has the fanqie 相 + 瑜; originally written 須, modern vulgar usage adds the water radical to make 須, which is incorrect. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Zhouli says: '須 refers to the beard and whiskers below the chin.' The Shuowen says: 'Facial hair.' The Gujin zhengzi writes it with 髟 as 鬚, which is the orthodox character. The lower character has the fanqie 番 + 韈. The Zishu says: '髮 is the hair on top of the head.' The Yunying says: '髦 \[sound: 毛\] means hair.' It is also written \[廷-壬+頁\] or \[廷-壬+(甾-田+貝)\], both of which are ancient forms of 髮. The Shuowen says: '髮 is the hair on top of the head; it is analyzed from 髟 with 犮 as phonetic').
