> Remote borderland (邊鄙) (The second character has the fanqie bei + mei \[b-\]. The Shiji says: 'Bi (鄙) means rustic and crude.' Du Yu's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: 'Bi refers to a border settlement; that is, situated outside the outskirts of the border towns, far away from the national capital, hence called crude and remote. A rustic person (鄙人) who does not understand the Odes, Documents, rites, or music is called a vulgar fellow (鄙夫).' The Shuowen says: 'Five za (酇) make a bi; derived from yi (settlement) with \[口/(百-日+回)\] as phonetic; za has the fanqie zu + duan \[z-\]').
