> Stems and stalks (莖稈) (The first character has the fanqie xing + geng \[j-\]. The Kaosheng says: 'Jing (莖) is the base.' The Bencao says: 'Jing.' The Jixun says: 'The stalk of herbs and trees.' The Shuowen says: 'The trunk of branches; derived from cao with jing as phonetic.' The second character has the fanqie gan + lan \[g-\]. The Zuo zhuan says: 'Grain straw.' The Guangya says: 'Rice stems are called gan (稈).' The Kaosheng says: 'Stems of grain and millet.' The Shuowen also says: 'Stalk of grain; derived from he (grain) with gan as phonetic.' Sometimes written 䄨, which is the same. When sūtra texts write it with gan (𠏉) as \[卓\*人\], although commonly interchanged, that is not its primary meaning).
