> Lungs and kidneys (𰮈𦜜): The first character is read with the fanqie 芳 + 吠; it is the essence of metal and white in colour. The Shuowen says: 'The fire organ. It derives from 肉 with 市 (read with the fanqie 非 + 未) providing the phonetic.' Wang Shuhe's Maijing says: 'The lungs govern the nose; if the lungs have sores, the nose smells foul.' The second character is read with the fanqie 辰 + 忍; it is the water organ, black in colour and yin; its shape is paired (偶, read with the fanqie 五 + 苟), hence the kidneys are a pair. The Shuowen says: 'It derives from 肉 with an abbreviated 臤 (read with the fanqie 口 + 千) providing the phonetic.' Wang Shuhe's Maijing says: 'The kidneys govern the ears; therefore, when the kidneys are deficient, the ears are deaf, being diagnosed by what they govern.'
