> Brain and membrane (腦膜): The first character is read with the fanqie 乃 + 倒. The Shuowen says: 'The marrow within the head.' In ancient script it is written as 𱑄, or as \[甾-十+乂\], or also as \[女\*(巢-果+(离-禸))\] or 𢙉, which are erroneous. The Shuowen has it deriving from 肉 with \[甾-十+乂\] providing the phonetic. The second character is read with the fanqie 忙 + 博. The Shuowen says: 'The membrane inside the head.' The Zitong says: 'What lies inside the skin and outside the flesh is called 膜. It derives from 肉 with 莫 providing the phonetic.'
