> Brambles and thorns (棘莿: the first character has the fanqie j\[īng\] + \[l\]ì, which was already fully explained earlier under the Vijñaptimātratā Treatise. The second character has the fanqie c\[ī\] + \[z\]ì. Guo's commentary on the Erya states: "'朿茦' (cì cì) are thorns." The Fangyan states: "Whenever herbs and trees pierce people, it is called 刺 (cì)." The Shuowen says: "An awn on trees; meaning there are sharp prickles on the outer bark of trees, of the kind found on wild jujubes, Siberian elms, and trifoliate oranges." It is also written with the grass radical \[艸\] as 莿. The sūtra writes 㓨, which is an error).
