> Aosheng (foul stench and fishy rankness) (the first character has the fanqie: 昌 + 咒 \[chòu\]; the \*Yueling\* states: 'Its smell is rank.' Gu Yewang states: 'It is a collective name for foul vapors.' The \*Shuowen\* states: 'Whenever a hound pursues game on the run, it knows its tracks by scent (chou); hence it takes 犬 and 自 as an associative compound.' It is also written with 歹 as 殠; 歹 has the sound \[歹\*又\]. The second character has the sound xīng; Kong's commentary to the \*Shangshu\* states: 'Sheng means foul odor.' The \*Shuowen\* states: 'Dog fat; it takes 肉 as semantic classifier and 生 as phonetic.' In the sūtra it is written as 腥, which is also interchangeable).
