> Five grains (五穀): We note: The 'Yueling' (Monthly Ordinances) of the Book of Rites states that in spring the Son of Heaven eats wheat. Zheng says: 'Wheat has husks and belongs to wood.' In summer he eats pulse; pulse is beans; pulse has firm and closed husks and belongs to water. In late summer he eats millet; millet is the chief of the five grains and belongs to earth; earth occupies the center. In autumn he eats hemp seeds; the seeds have grain patterns and belong to metal. In winter he eats broomcorn millet; broomcorn millet blooms freely and disperses, belonging to fire. All these follow the seasons in eating them so as to bring peace to one's constitution.
