> Fragrant and sweet-smelling (芬馥: the first is pronounced with the fanqie 芳文 \[fēn\]. The Kaosheng says: "Fenfen describes a fragrant aroma." The Shuowen says: "The fragrance diffusing when earth and grasses first sprout; originally deriving from 屮 \[pronounced with the fanqie 丑列, chè\]; nowadays it is also written with 'grass' \[艸\] with 分 as phonetic." In the sūtra text some write it with vapor \[气\] as 氛, pronounced fén, meaning auspicious vapor, which is not the sūtra's meaning; some write it with 'fragrance' \[香\] as 馚, which is an invalid character and incorrect. The second is pronounced with the fanqie 馮福 \[fù\]. The Han Commentary on the Classic of Poetry says: "Fenfu describes a fragrant aroma; deriving from 'fragrance' \[香\] with 复 as phonetic").
